Guide to Solar Grants in Ireland 2025

Guide to Solar Grants in Ireland 2025

Ireland continues to embrace solar energy.

A report issued in October 2024 revealed that almost 400 solar farms are in development across the country. If successfully installed, they would double the amount of solar electricity targeted for generation by 2030.

Furthermore, it is estimated that the solar industry could be worth as much as an annual €2.7 billion to the Irish economy by the close of the 2020s.

The Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA), meanwhile, has identified an incredible 335% increase in solar energy in Ireland in recent years.

This surge comes at a time when homeowners and businesses are seriously weighing up the many benefits of ‘going solar’. Perhaps you’re in that bracket, and you’re hopeful of some financial assistance in making the move? Let’s see what we can do…

Why Choose Solar Energy in Ireland?

Committing to solar energy brings with it a range of positives for you and those around you - even future generations of people are likely to gain an advantage.

A move to solar power will:

  • Reduce your energy bills by up to 75%
  • Afford you more overall energy independence
  • Increase the value of your property
  • Decrease your reliance on fossil fuels
  • Reduce your carbon footprint

It’s a big step to take, absolutely, but the long-term benefits are difficult to argue against. We estimate that a move to our solar power panels will lock in your own electricity prices for over 25 years, and you can expect to save up to 75% on your bills.

You’ll also directly contribute to a safer and more sustainable environment for everyone to enjoy.

Now, there is something of an elephant in the room here so let’s address it - ‘Ireland’ and ‘blazing sunshine’ don’t always feature in the same sentence. There’s also the small matter of contrasting seasons and less available daylight to consider.

Thankfully, our exclusive ATLAS 445W panels are engineered by Activ8 Energies in Ireland specifically meet challenging and ever-changing Irish weather conditions, and our partnership with Duracell ensures an incredibly efficient charging and surplus storage experience.

Now, about that financial assistance…

How to Apply for Solar Panel Grants in Ireland

Ready to submit the all-important paperwork for the grant you want? Let’s first make sure we have everything we need.

Activ8 manage the full grant application on our customer’s behalf and can answer any questions you might have. To qualify for the SEAI solar electricity grant, we create an application on your behalf and proceed with installment works once official grant approval has been received. If the grant is approved, the work must be carried out inside eight months - the grant will expire beyond this timeline.

Before applying, the SEAI advises you to read the application guide and terms and conditions, speak with a registered company - this includes Activ8 Solar Energies- and arrange a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessor

What do I need to apply?

Ensure you have the following before proceeding with your application:

  • A registered and active email address (for online portal applications)
  • For a paper-based application form, contact the SEAI on 01 808 20 04 or email solarpv@seai.ie
  • Your home address, including your Eircode
  • Your bank details in the form of your IBAN and BIC
  • Your 11-digit Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) - you will find this at the top of your electricity bill
  • The year in which your house was constructed
  • The name of your chosen solar PV company
  • The size of the system you intend to install - ask your solar PV company for this

I’ve Submitted my Application - What Happens Next?

As is the case with any application, patience is a virtue, so give it a little time while you wait to hear back.

If your application is successful, you will receive a grant approval email or postal letter from the SEAI. Your chosen solar PV company will also be informed and provided with the relevant grant documents related to your installation. Remember, you cannot proceed with any works until approval has been granted.

FAQs about Solar Grants in Ireland

Let’s finish up by looking at the most commonly encountered queries when it comes to grants for solar panels in Ireland.

How Much is the SEAI Solar Grant?

When discussing your Solar PV system with one of our solar experts, we run through the amount relevant to your system size (up to a max of €1,800). We have always and will continue to always give the amount of the grant off the price of your system at the point of purchase. We then administer all grant work in Activ8 and retrospectively claim the grant back, in the months following installation. This allows you to avail of the full grant amount up front, rather than waiting months and enduring the process alone.

How Long Will the SEAI Grant be Available?

The SEAI grant has been reduced twice by €300 and is currently capped at €1,800. The government intend to continue providing the grant until 2029, but this could be subject to change.

If the Grant is Successful, How Long Will It Take From Purchase to Installation?

When you register your details with us, we will give you a call to organise an appointment with one of our solar consultants. If you decide to go ahead with solar upon our consultants visit, a technical survey will be conducted before any installation and you’ll be consulted by our installations team on available installation dates that suit you.
